ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY
What is Assistive Technology?
Assistive Technology (AT) is devices and/or methods that are used to compensate for functional limitations and to increase mobility, communication and overall independence. AT can be as simple as a walking cane, or as sophisticated as a voice activated device or customized work stations.
The need for AT can be found in a wide range of disabilities. Simple tasks such as opening a car door, getting into a building, talking on the phone, changing a television channel, and getting help in an emergency are not always easy for someone with a disability. Even the most advanced technology that is meant to improve lives, such as the computer, is not accessible to everyone.
The Assistive Technology Department strives to give people with disabilities the capability to perform tasks that they were formerly unable to accomplish, or had great difficulty accomplishing. This is done by providing enhancements to current technology or new tools that allow the accomplishment of even the most basic human need tasks.
Through the use of assistive technology, CLASS has helps people to communicate, live more independently and to pursue their goals. The opportunities that are available to people with disabilities through technology are numerous and will continue to expand as technology advances.
